The Car Scrappage Scheme
A threat to the environment is posed by old cars. Ideally they should be scrapped and replaced by newer and more fuel efficient cars. This is one of the driving forces behind the car scrappage scheme created by the government. If you scrap an eligible car when you buy a new one you will receive a £2,000 discount off the OTR price. Although the idea sounds great, at Scrap Car London we believe their are some problems with the scheme. For one thing, the scheme dictates to you which new cars you can purchase in exchange for scrapping your old car. Strict criteria must also be met by the old scrap car in order to be eligible. Listed below, are the requirements for the scheme.
The old car you are scrapping must:
- Be insured when you order the new car
- Have been registered to you continuously for one year
- Have been registered in the UK on or before 31st August, 1999
- Have a United Kingdom address on the registration certificate (also known as V5C)
- Have a valid MOT (or within 14 days of expiry) on the old car at the time you order the new one
- Be registered with the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency or Driver and Vehicle Agency in your name
- Have an in date (or within 14 days of expiry) tax disc when the order of your new car is placed
- Be a small van or car weighing 3.5 tonnes or under
Of course, few cars meet these strict requirements. Many people in London who had hoped to profit from scrapping their car have been disappointed to learn that they did not meet the requirements.
